How To Change A Tire

April 8th, 2010 by jamesktracy | No Comments | Filed in Tire & Lube Ogden Auto Repair

Since the invention of the car, a common problem that drivers have to prepare for is that one (or more) of their tires may fail while driving. A whole service industry was created to help the victims of this most unfortunate of car problems with an Ogden auto repair shop. However, it is possible that you might be afflicted by this problem and find that a recovery vehicle might take too long to reach you. It could be possible that you will have to replace the tire yourself. That might sound daunting, but it is in fact, easier than most people might imagine. So, here is the 10 step guide to changing your tire:

  1. Ensure that you have pulled your vehicle onto the side of a road and try to come to rest on a flat, even section of ground. Engage the handbrake and turn off the engine.
  2. If you have a warning triangle sign in your car, set this up so that oncoming traffic can see this before they reach where your car is. Put on a fluorescent jacket – especially if it is dark.
  3. Remove the spare wheel from your boot (it is often underneath a removable section of the base) along with a jack and wheel wrench.
  4. Before jacking the car up, use the wheel wrench to loosen the lug nuts (found in the center of the wheel – sometimes underneath the hubcap).
  5. Jack up the car slowly and once the tire is raised above the ground, finish loosening and removing the lug nuts.
  6. Now remove the wheel with the flat tire and place it safely to one side. This can sometimes be deceptively heavy, so remove with care.
  7. Move the new wheel with the fresh tire into place and then tighten the lug nuts – as before, when loosening the lug nuts, do not tighten them completely.
  8. Lower and remove the jack. Finish tightening the lug nuts.
  9. Pack away all your tools and the old tire in your boot.
  10. Finally, make one last check to ensure the wheel and tire is on properly, before continuing on your journey.

One thing that you should be aware of is that replacement tires are not meant to be driven on over a long distance. They are there to allow you to keep moving until you can get some professional help from an Ogden auto repair shop.

Spring Ogden Auto Repair

April 8th, 2010 by jamesktracy | No Comments | Filed in Auto Repair Ogden

Hang the snow shovel in the back corner, put the ice scraper on the shelf. Check out the daffodils and get ready for Spring. Old man winter has buried his head for this season. It is time for convertibles, picnics, and the beach.

Before you go too far down that Spring road, remember to get your car ready for Spring as well. You do not want to find yourself along the road with the hood up waiting for a tow.

Go to your nearest Ogden auto repair shop and get a spring preventative maintenance review.

Gas prices are going to continue to go up so anything we can do to keep the auto in top working order will save money in the long run. Check and replace the air filter. A dirty air filter will cause a decrease in mileage and is an easy item to forget.

Replace the oil and filter. Check the fuel injectors and fuel filter. Check all the hoses and belts. If any wear replace now rather than waiting until they break down.

Top all fluids. Check cooling system fluid and replace if necessary or add if low. Check the battery. Are the terminals making good contact?

How are the tires? Notice any unusual wear. Are the tires properly inflated? Did you use a special winter tire. If so time to change back.

What about the outside of the car. Check for any dings that should be repaired. Give your vehicle a thorough cleaning inside and out. Clean the mats of all the road salt and vacuum the seats of all the accumulated debris.

Give your car some special care with a car wax or a car sealant to recover the showroom luster lost from the winter months.

With a little attention now at an Ogden auto repair shop, your car will be ready for the good times.
